After all the enthusiasm of last night, this morning’s cold hard daylight revealed a clean cutover would require some additional tools (like a micro-SIM tray). These will be acquired post-haste.
In the meanwhile, I have been playing carrying out detailed testing of the Pre as a fat iPod Touch.
Items of note from day zero:
- the hardware design & build quality are second only to Apple in terms of polish and fit & finish
- initial setup is surprisingly similar to iOS 5 (or, given webOS predates iOS 5, should I say iOS “borrows” a lot from webOS in the setup department)
- the touchstone charger is pretty darned cool, in the “I’m living in the future!” kind of way. We’ll see how functional it is over the next few days
- there being no onscreen keyboard seems more annoying than it should be
- the gesture area is a very nice feature
- Firmware version 2.2.1 is buggy as anything and wants to crash every 3 hours. 2.2.3 seems much more stable.
