On Psalming

How To Psalm Like A Verb

Step One

Pick a range of, say, twenty Psalms.

e.g. 40-59

Step Two

Speed-read through the first three to five verses of each. You’re looking for the one that most closely describes how you feel now.

Step Three

Paragraph by paragraph, start writing out your Psalm in your own words, appropriate to your own circumstances, using modern vernacular.

Be sure to finish the Psalm; in particular, follow the Psalmist as s/he “turns”.

Step Four

Store your Psalm in a safe place where you can read it again later if you want.
