After university, having expanded my musical tastes somewhat – I’ll probably go into that a bit more later – I stumbled across an album by a performer I’d mostly written off up until that point. Robbie Williams had seemed like a bit of an empty shell to my snobbish tastes, but a friend at the time made me listen to Swing When You’re Winning, and it was revelatory.

The man had chops and style, and sang with a heart that I hadn’t heard before. (I’d clearly missed that on his earlier albums.) Not long after I’d bought the CD, my own rubbish interpretation of “Ain’t That a Kick In the Head” landed me my first (and only) musical theatre gig!
